Notes
This started life as a semi-abstract portrait painting “Midnight Sun”. Its silver grey background represented the dull sunlight and ice of Iceland. I tipped it onto its side whilst I considered what to do with it.
Along came a photo of the first White Storks to breed in England for 600 years.
After the success of The Fall of Mariupol, I started to paint the Storks on top of a rising Sun. The enclosing branches were full of dark green leaves that I thought distracted too much from the birds. The end result is a Japanese effect.
There is added meaning to the title as it was completed the day of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.
